Nova Smith is a British maker whose practice focuses on material-led objects concerned with movement and form.

 

She works primarily in metals including copper, silver, and brass. Her work is informed by an interest in materiality and in how similar processes can be found and translated across different material groups, leading her to develop forms that are reworked and reinterpreted across different materials as part of an ongoing studio practice.

 

During her degree, from which she graduated with First Class Honours in 2024, she was awarded silver by Sheffield Assay Office. This enabled her to translate existing designs from copper and brass into silver and begin working at scale in precious metals. The Assay Master commissioned the centrepiece of her degree show, Dinner For 3, to be realised in sterling silver for their private and permanent collection.

 

Her work has been exhibited at the Millennium Galleries (Sheffield), Goldsmiths North (Sheffield), Mint Gallery (London Design Festival 2024), the Goldsmiths Centre (London), Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair (Manchester), and with AGC Italy (Milan). She has also worked collaboratively as part of a studio producing three kinetic viewfinders for the Natural History Museum gardens in London.

 

Her studio is based in an industrial mill in West Yorkshire.
